It has been shown that F-2-fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose (FDG) positron emission tomography (PET) is able to identify primary lesion, lymph node involvement, and distant metastasis or other secondary tumor in head and neck cancer patients. Herein, we present a case of head and neck cancer with multiple abnormal FDG accumulation in the skeletal system. The abnormal FDG uptake was considered as polyostotic fibrous dysplasia, instead of multiple bone metastases depicting from a series of previous bone scans, clinical follow up and presentation of morphologic pictures in FDG PET studies. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case report of the coexistence of polyostotic fibrous dysplasia and head and neck cancer on FDG PET scan.

PET-positive polyostotic fibrous dysplasia mimicking Ollier disease.
Fibrous dysplasia can be monostotic or, less commonly, polyostotic. The imaging features of polyostotic fibrous dysplasia may closely mimic those of metastatic bone disease, Paget disease, or enchondromatosis (Ollier disease). We present a unique case of polyostotic fibrous dysplasia in a 57-year-old female with a medical history of enchondromas involving the proximal phalanges of the left hand...
متن کاملImage Findings of Polyostotic Fibrous Dysplasia Mimicking Metastasis in F-18 FDG Positron Emission Tomography/Computed Tomography
Fibrous dysplasia (FD) of the bone is characterized by the medullary cavity of bones becoming filled with fibrous tissue, and its etiology remains unknown. It is usually asymptomatic and found incidentally on imaging studies that are performed for other purposes. FD may closely mimic the appearance of bony metastatic disease on radiological examinations. We report the case of a 45-year-old fema...

Whole-body bone scans and whole body (18)F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomographic/computed tomographic scans are sensitive for detecting bone metastasis in patients with breast cancer. However, it is often difficult to discriminate between bone metastasis and other nonmalignant bone lesions. Polyostotic fibrous dysplasia is a rare disorder characterized by the osteoid medullary cavity...
متن کاملRadionuclide Treatment with 153Sm-EDTMP is Effective for the Palliation of Bone Pain in the Context of Extensive Bone Marrow Metastases: A Case Report
Radionuclide therapy is widely used as an effective modality in the management of bone pain. The main indication for this treatment is symptomatic bone metastases, confirmed by bone scintigraphy. We present a case of small cell lung cancer (SCLC) stage T4N2M1b, with a good metabolic response to systemic therapy and radiotherapy of the primary tumor and locoregional disease, which became metabol...

Fibrous dysplasia of the bone (FDB) is a common, genetic, developmental disorder with a benign course. FDB can be seen anywhere throughout the skeleton. It is usually asymptomatic and found incidentally on imaging studies that are performed for other purposes. Although whole body 18 F-flourodeoxyglucose PET/CT (FDG PET/CT) is widely used in tumor imaging, infections and benign pathologies like ...
